The airport is located on the site of the former Bergstrom Air
Force Base, in southeast Austin on Texas Hwy. 71 near the intersection with U.S.
Hwy. 183. Eight miles from downtown and the State Capitol.
It's the first U.S. conversion of an Air Force Base to
commercial airport since the end of the Cold War. Austin's global aspirations
were taking place just as the U.S. Air Force was making plans to close Bergstrom
Air Force Base, an Austin fixture since World War II.
